Still loving my job. And a second (albeit smaller) paycheck will come in handy. Paradise is not cheap!
I finished up a couple of short-term and rearrangement composing projects, and now I'm looking forward to revisiting a pair of orchestral compositions for an upcoming contest. Still whittling down my list of projects... :)
I'm also hoping to start helping out at MusOpen's Music Theory Textbook Wiki, adding some RNA examples and editing. Check it out here!
When I've got a decent sized set of RNA examples, I'll post them all to my website and link from here. I hope to assemble a free collection resources for music teachers. So, for any of you musicians out there, let me know if have any requests!

Update: Update
Update to the update: I have a job! I'll be working as a Call Center Operator with CSD, a company that assists in relaying phone conversations for deaf and hard of hearing customers.
Yay! It's nice to have a real job that feels like it matters to someone. Plus, I have the option of working only 32 hours, leaving time for early morning composing, projects, etc. (see list below!)

Update: Priorities
Another blog entry more for me than for anyone else. (Aren't they all?)
Next Tuesday marks one month since moving to Hawaii. (Wow, one whole month already?!) We're mostly settled, mostly know our way around, and are mostly still enjoying ourselves thoroughly.
I feel confident that my job search will pay off soon, and I am really looking forward to the structure that will bring to my days. Lately I've gotten very little artistic work done while having all the time in the world!
Because I love lists, here's a list of goals and projects I'm considering working on while I'm here.
* Exercise:
- Play Ultimate 2-4 days per week
- Swim 1-2 days per week
- Exercise (including Ultimate and swimming) 4-6 days per week
* Professional Development:
- Listen to operas, other classical works, at least 1 day per week
- Practice theremin
- Practice piano
- Read music history text
* Creative Commons Projects (education materials free for public use):
- Music Theory Examples (Roman Numerals, part-writing, form, etc.)
- Aural Skills Examples (chords, intervals, melodies, harmonies, etc...)
* Compositions:
- String Quartet No. 1: At Best It Sometimes Rhymes (revision of 2009 work)
- Dirge for the New Sunrise (chamber work based on the Edith Sitwell poem)
- in memoriam Hibakusha (revision of 2007 voice, piano, and tape work)
- Miniature Symphony No. 1 in D Major (arrangement for piano trio)
- She Gestures (engraving of proportional-time spacing piano solo)
- Orpheus (re)Set (completion of 2008 set of songs)
- [Untitled] (orchestral work honoring Lincoln's bicentennial)
- [Untitled] (new 60-minute, one-act chamber opera)
- [Untitled] (a set of contemporary etudes for the theremin)
- [Untitled] ("Great American Songbook"-style songs, maybe for Christmas?)

LIFE UPDATE!
Quick and dirty, here are some tidbits about my life as we head back to school. I'm...
...recently back from vacation (belated 2nd anniversary!) in VA and MD. We camped, hiked the Appalachian Trail, brought TOOTSIE!!, visited some vineyards, and stayed in a great B&B. It was awesome.
...taking only 4 credits this semester: Comp. Seminar and Lessons. YAY!!!
...compiling and whittling down my list of composition deadlines and competitions. More to come...
...starting a "Recycled Orchestra" club at a local public charter school this year, teaching kids in Kindergarten through 4th grade about the basic history and instrument families of the orchestra. They'll use throw-away or recyclable materials from home to create instruments of their own, then use them to create music together. Yay!
...(probably) working at the music library this year.
...teaching Harmony I & II again this year. Yay!
...maybe going to do some theory tutoring, too... if anyone wants it.
...really excited to be starting school. YAY!!

News in the Life of Kyle
Today, I:
...found out that I didn't get in to the Carnegie Hall Golijov/Upshaw Song Workshop for this Fall, although I'm not too surprised or crushed!
...submitted a score for yet another competition, and for the first time felt really good about the piece I was submitting. Awesome.
...had my first class of Summer Session II - Score Reading at the Piano. It should be a great class, even though (or because?) it mainly consists of my showing off my lack of piano sight-reading and clef-reading skills!
...need to sleep. Bye for now!
